Workshop Helps Young People to Progress in Their Career Field

(Evanston, Ill.) The Youth Job Center of Evanston hosted “How to Appropriately Prepare for Jobs in High-Growth Industries.” the second workshop of its annual Summer Employment Series last week. Panelists at the workshop advised more than 40 job seekers on how to prepare themselves for high-growth industries.

Held in the Evanston Public Library, three panelists discussed on how to research the college they want to go to and make sure that their school has the right major they want to pursue in, gave them insight on how important it is to network and make a good impression of themselves, and offered tips for how to sell yourself, your skills and your experience to an employer. Panelists included Molly Verble, an YJC program counselor; Jessica Wingarder, an YJC employment counselor; and Barbara Klein, the works at the Hotel Hilton as their director of sales. The information was for those who really wanted to get the fast-tracked management positions, and to learn the importance of networking as well.

Verble really stressed that the youth employment trends are at an all-time high. In 2009, adults aged 18-19 had the highest percentage rate for employment. “You really want to research the school that you want to go to and see if your major is successful,” Verble said. “We want our job seekers to know that and feel confident that there really are jobs available for those who are equipped with the skills to find them.”

Jessica Wingarder focused on the importance of networking and how vital it is to really be successful in the job market. “To go about networking, there are four things to focus on: volunteer, join professional organizations, get involved locally in your area, and to go online and go seeking,” Wingarder said. “It’s also really good to talk to people in their and your career field.”

Barbara Klein talked about how to really market and sell yourself to your employer so that you can advance up in their career field. “For whatever job you want, you always want to ask for that next assignment. Ask for more, people will respect you more.” Klein said. “Show your passion, ask for questions, ask for more, and volunteer is critical in order to succeed in your career field.”
