Summer Tutors Program FAQ's:What is the Summer Tutors Program?The Summer Tutors Program hires 14, 15, and 16 year olds to be teacher and office assistants in District 65 elementary summer schools. You will learn valuable job skills, gain experience in education and administration, and serve as positive role models for younger peers. As mentors, you will provide the extra attention that student's need, while nurturing a passion for learning that will last a lifetime.
How long is the program?The Summer Tutors Program will run July 11th-August 11th. There is a mandatory orientation Wednesday, July 6th and a four day training July 11th-14th. Summer school begins July 18th and ends August 11th. There will be an additional training day during summer school and at the end of summer celebration. The program will continue throughout the school year with quarterly leadership trainings, dates TBD.What hours will I be expected to work?Monday through Thursday from 8:15am-12:15pm; you will also be required to attend an orientation, four days of training and an end-of-the-summer party.
What kind of things will I be expected to do?Tutors are assigned to a classroom and are expected to help the teacher with tasks, such as:
- Take attendance
- Plan and execute classroom activites
- Assist in identifying and resolving of problems
- Manage the classroom and the supervision of breaks/recess
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment
- Other duties as needed

Is it mandatory to attend the orientation and all four days of staff training?YES! This training will provide information that will help you be successful as a tutor and will assist you to obtain employment in the future. How much will I get paid?Tutors are paid a stipend for the four day training and 4 weeks of work. In the past, tutors have been paid a little over $500 for the summer.
Why can't I be in summer school and work as a tutor as well?Unfortunately, the summer school hours conflict.
What if I have a vacation planned or want to attend a camp?Talk to your parents or guardian and see if you are able to take a vacation or attend camp before or after the summer school session. You cannot miss more than 2 days of work during the 5 weeks (no exceptions).
Will I need a work permit?Yes, if you are 14 or 15 years old. Once you are hired, you will need to obtain a work permit before the first day of training. The Youth Job Center will provide the tutor with an "Intent to Hire" letter. You should be able to obtain the permit from an issuing officer at your school.
