When is the Outpost open?

The Outpost is open during the regular school year; it is closed during summer break. During the year, it is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

When during the school day do students visit the Outpost?

During lunch periods, free periods, during study hall with a teacher's pass or after school.

Can a student under l6 get a job?

While most employers require an employee be l6, some employers will hire l4 or l5 year-olds with a work permit. Younger teenagers are also eligible for the Odd Job program. Please ask for more information at the Outpost.

What's the procedure for getting an appointment at the Outpost?

No appointment is necessary; students can drop in when they are available.  First, they are asked to take home an application to fill out. It must be signed by a parent if under 18.  That information is then entered into the computer, and the counseling begins.

How many students typically get jobs through the Outpost?

In the 2008-2009 school year, the Outpost placed 87 students into jobs. The number varies each year depending on the need of employers.

What kinds of jobs do Outpost clients get?

A variety. Typical positions include clerks and sales associates at local stores, restaurants, movie theatres, servers at restaurants or nursing homes.  Positions also include office assistants and receptionists in local businesses, camp counselors, lifeguards, staff for park district programs, water parks, child care for after-school programs and internships.

What do these jobs pay?

The minimum wage in Illinois is currently $8.25/hr. for workers 18 and over.  Minimum wage for workers under l8 is $7.50/hr. Hourly rates of pay vary; often depending upon experience. Most jobs will pay between $9.00 - $12.00/hr.

Where is the Outpost located?

The ETHS Outpost is located in Room W-122C (right across from Boltwood Cafeteria) at Evanston Township High School.
