Core Placement Services FAQ's:

Do I qualify for Core?

Core helps job seekers ages 14-25, and the program has no residency requirements. Clients who are 18 and over should choose Core if they feel confident in their job skills or need specific help in only one or two areas of job readiness. All clients age 17 and under are automatically enrolled in Core.

Will you place me in a job?

Core counselors can REFER you to jobs, but direct placement into jobs is limited.

How long does it take to get a job?

It varies. Some clients find a job within a couple weeks, others take longer. It depends on several factors, including how dedicated the client is to finding a job, what type of job the client is looking for, the time of year, the age of the client and the client’s previous work experience.

What types of jobs are there for people under the age of 16?

For clients under 16 years old, it can be more difficult to find a job. Most employers who hire employees under the age of 16 are in the food service industry. It is easier to find a job during the summer. The Youth Job Center of Evanston also offers an odd job program and the Summer Tutors program for clients under the age of 16 to gain paid work experience. Feel free to inquire about these at any time.

Do I need a work permit?

Employees under the age of 16 need a work permit. In the state of Illinois, you must first obtain the job and then get the work permit (the employer must sign off on the work permit). You can get a work permit at your school.

When should I look for a summer job?

Summer jobs go quickly. Most employers begin hiring for summer jobs in January and February. Summer jobs are usually filled by mid-May.

What is the best way to get a job?

The best way to get a job is often about who you know. When looking for a job, tell everyone you know. The counselors at the YJC have formed relationships with many local employers. Therefore, we can often help you get your foot in the door to many local businesses.

What will I do during my appointment with a Core counselor?

During your appointment, we will discuss ways to reach your employment goals, such as composing a resume or working on interview skills. We will also discuss the type of job you want and which employers may be hiring at that time.
