2011 Summer Tutors Program Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Summer Tutors Program?

The Summer Tutors Program hires 14, 15, and 16 year olds to be teacher and office assistants in District 65 elementary summer schools. You will learn valuable job skills, gain experience in education and administration, and serve as positive role models for younger peers.

How long is the program?

This summer the program will run July 11-August 11. There is a mandatory orientation Wednesday, July 6 and a four day training July 11-14. Summer school begins July 18 and ends August 11. There will be an additional training day during summer school and a end of the summer celebration.

What hours will I be expected to work?

Monday through Thursday from 8:15am-12:15pm. You will also be required to attend an orientation, four days of training and an end-of-the-summer party.

What kind of things will I be expected to do?

Take attendance, plan and execute classroom activities, assist in identifying and resolving problems, manage the classroom and the supervision of breaks/recess, maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, other duties as needed.

Is it mandatory to attend the orientation and all four days of staff training?

YES! This training will provide information that will help you be successful as a tutor and will assist you to obtain employment in the future.

How much will I get paid?

Tutors are paid a stipend for the four day training and 4 weeks of work. In the past, tutors have been paid a little over $500 for the summer.

Why can't I be in summer school and work as a summer tutor as well?

Unfortunately, the summer school hours conflict.

What if I have a vacation planned or want to attend a camp?

Talk to your parents or guardian and see if you are able to take a vacation or attend camp before or after the Summer Tutors Program. You cannot miss more than 2 days of work during the 5 weeks (no exceptions).

Will I need a work permit?

Yes, if you are 14 or 15 years old. Once you are hired you will need to obtain a work permit before the first day of training. The Youth Job Center will provide the tutor with an "Intent to Hire" letter. You should be able to obtain the permit from an issuing officer at your school.
